Differences between Sauna and Turkish Bath

A Sauna and a Turkish Bath produce similar beneficial effects: they purify the skin due to the heavy perspiration, strengthen the lymphatic system, contribute to the elimination of toxins, help regenerate the tissues making the skin more resistant to the heat, the cold, the wind or the smog and regularize the blood pressure due to the vasodilatation.
They are also good for the heart's activity, by obstructing the fat accumulation in the blood vessels.

Differences in appearance:

The Finnish Sauna is typically a wooden cabin, equipped with benches (in natural raw wood) at different heights where you can sit or lie; whereas, the Turkish Bath, being a humid environment, is made of marble or stone where the benches are placed all at one level.

In the Finnish Sauna, the heat is generated by a heater (an electric one in modern saunas) made of volcanic rocks that absorb and radiate the heat.
The temperatures vary from about 50° on the lower benches, to 75° on the medium ones, to 85° on the higher ones. Instead, in the Turkish Bath the heat is spread throughout the environment thanks to the steam.

The humidity level in a Sauna is almost nonexistent, reaching max 10/15%, whereas, in the Turkish Bath it is very high (90/100%) with temperatures from 20/25° at floor level to 40/45° at head height.

General differences:

The main differences between the Finnish Sauna and the Turkish Bath are linked to the type of heat: a strong and dry heat in the Sauna compared to a medium and humid heat in the Steam Bath.

The strong, dry heat of the Sauna (90°) helps relaxation and lowers stress levels; it is highly recommended for those who practice sport as it deeply penetrates and encourages the expulsion of lactic acid.
It also carries out a decontracting effect on the weary muscles and prepares the muscular system for activity.
Furthermore, it is an ideal method to relieve pain from illnesses, like muscular or joint traumas.
Lastly, the strong heat acts as an efficient antibacterial defence, encouraging the immune system and preventing the main seasonal bugs, like colds, flues, sinusitis, etc.

The Turkish Bath differentiates from the Sauna due to the steam at 45°.
The lower temperatures and the stronger humidity permit a longer stay and increased perspiration resulting in a greater expulsion of toxins.
The steam's beneficial properties are ideal for those who have blood pressure problems, as it contributes to stabilizing its level. It also helps prevent any breathing diseases thanks to the balm essences that you will inhale through the steam.
